Hassalo on Eighth

Hassalo on Eighth is an eco-district built in a part of Portland known more for parking lots and office buildings. Using state-of-the-art technology, Hassalo has become a case-study on how to create sustainable green buildings that feel fun and easy to live in. We celebrated the fact that we were building more than 3 “green buildings," but that we were creating a new neighborhood in a city that is built of unique neighborhoods.
This project included naming, logos and style guides for not only the overall brand, but each individual building as well.

The Aster Tower is the tallest building on Portland’s East Side, offering amazing views of Downtown Portland and the Williamette River. We wanted the name of this building to relate to nature found in the area and also have some kind of nod to the height and views the building offers.
The Aster Tower is named after is a Greek word meaning “star”, and is also a summer wild flower found in the Oregon. A perfect fit for the Hassalo on Eighth neighborhood. (Designer Tara Ketner).

Velomo named after on of Portland’s favorite pastimes, biking. Situated in an area surrounded by bike lanes and close to a central commute hub, it was easy to see how biking would help define this neighborhood. Velomor is a compound word created from from “velo” and “amore” to create a new word meaning “love of biking”.
